Dr. Lopes is an associate professor of the Department of Mathematics at PUC-Rio, where he has been working since 1992. He is a Computer Engineer graduated at PUC-Rio in 1990. After that, he got a Master degree in Computer Science at PUC-Rio in 1992 and a Doctor degree in Mathematical Science at PUC-Rio in 1996, both under the supervision of Prof. Geovan Tavares. In 2001, he worked for the PURDUE University as a consultant in a project supervised by Prof. Christoph M. Hoffmann at the Computer Science Department.
His research is in the field of Computational and Applied Mathematics. He is partially sponsored by a CNPq productivity research scholarship and by research grants from CNPq, FAPERJ, CAPES and FINEP.
Since 1992, he has been applying his research to the development of computer systems for PETROBRAS, mainly in the area of reservoir characterization and seismic interpretation. For the last eight years, he did some consulting activities for other companies like BRADESCO SEGUROS, BANCO DO BRASIL, BNDES and VALE.
Dr. Lopes is an associate editor of the journal Nonlinear Theory and Its Applications (NOLTA, IEICE). He is also a member of the SBC (Brazilian Computer Society) and of the SBMAC (Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics).
