Thesis Title: Pressure Transient Analysis for Injectivity Tests in Multilayer Reservoirs
Defense: 03/12/2021 | Abstract | Thesis

Analytical models that describe the pressure behavior are extremely useful for pressure transient analysis and reservoir characterization as they provide estimates of reservoir parameters. This work has two main goals: first, to extend the existing solutions for injectivity/falloff tests in single-layer formations with horizontal wells so that they can be applied to multilayer stratified reservoirs with multilateral horizontal wells. Furthermore, this work applies impulse functions to obtain an alternative formulation for injectivity tests in multilayer commingled formations with vertical wells and single-layer reservoirs with horizontal wells.

Deep Morin Singularities of the McKean-Scovel Operator

The McKean-Scovel operator is the simplest nonlinear Sturm-Liouville operator acting on functions satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions: its nonlinearity is just taking the square of the incoming function. This text contains a proof of a conjecture from the late ´80: its critical set consists only of Morin singularities, which attain arbitrary depth.

Evaluating the impact of the inflation factors generation for the ensemble smoother with multiple data assimilation

The ensemble smoother with multiple data assimilation (ES-MDA) gained much attention as a powerful parameter estimation method. The main idea of the ES-MDA is to assimilate the same data multiple times with an inflated data covariance data error. In the original ES-MDA implementation, these inflation factors, such as the number of assimilations, are selected a priori. The only requirement is that the sum of the inflation factors’ inverses must be equal to one. Therefore, selecting them equal to the number of assimilations is a straightforward choice. Nevertheless, recent studies have shown a relationship between the ES-MDA update equation and the solution to a regularized inverse problem. Hence, the inflation factors play the role of the regularization parameter at each ES-MDA assimilation step. As a result, they have also suggested new procedures to generate these elements based on the discrepancy principle. Although several studies proposed efficient techniques to generate the ES-MDA inflation factors, an optimal procedure to generate them remains an open problem. Moreover, the studies diverge on which regularization scheme is sufficient to provide the best ES-MDA outcomes. Therefore, in this work, we address the problem of generating the ES-MDA inflation factors and their influence on the method’s performance. We present a numerical analysis of the influence of such factors on the main parameters of the ES-MDA, such as the ensemble size, the number of assimilations, and the ES-MDA vector of model parameters update. With the conclusions presented in the aforementioned analysis, we propose a new procedure to generate ES-MDA inflation factors based on a regularizing scheme for Levenberg-Marquardt algorithms. It is shown through a synthetic two-dimensional waterflooding problem that the new method achieves better model parameters and data match compared to the other ES-MDA implementations available in the literature.

Existence and regularity of solutions: nonlocal and nonlinear models

We consider two classes of partial differential equations. Namely: the radiative transfer equation and a doubly nonlinear model. The former concerns a nonlocal problema, driven by a scattering operator. We study the well-posedness of solutions in the peaked regime, for the half-space. A new averaging lemma yields interior regularity for the solutions and improved fractional regularization for the time derivatives. The second model we examine is a Trudinger equation with distinct nonlinearities degrees. Inspired by ideas launched by L. Caffarelli, we resort to approximation methods and prove improved regularity results for the solutions. The strategy is to relate our equation with p-caloric functions.

Asymptotic Nets with Constant Affine Mean Curvature

Discrete Differential Geometry aims to develop a discrete theory which respects fundamental aspects of smooth theory. With this in mind, some results of smooth theory of Affine Geometry are firstly introduced since their discrete counterparts shall be treated a posteriori. The first goal of this work is to construct a discrete affine structure for nets with indefinite Blaschke metric and asymptotic parameters. For this purpose, one defines a conormal vector field , which satisfies Lelieuvre’s equations and it is associated with a real parameter ; and an affine normal vector field , which defines the cubic form of the net and makes the structure well defined. Settled the structure down, one presents the discrete affine minimal surfaces which have a beautiful geometrical characterization.
This structure also allow to study ruled surfaces with emphasis on improper affine spheres, which are proved to be equiaffinely congruent to the graph of , for some real function . Moreover, it is proposed a definition for singularities in the case of discrete improper affine spheres from the center- chord construction. Another goal here is to propose a definition for an asymptotic net with constant affine mean curvature (CAMC), in a way that encompasses discrete affine minimal surfaces and discrete affine spheres. This work is completed with the main result about a discrete version of Cayley surfaces, which are ruled improper affine spheres that can be characterized by the induced connection as: an asymptotic net with CAMC is equiaffinely congruent to a Cayley surface if and only if the cubic form C does not vanish and the affine induced connection is parallel.

Combinatorial Games and the neighborhood conjecture

Combinatorial Games is the study of games with perfect information, this means that all players have knowledge of all possible moves, also there isn't luck or skill involved in performing a move, so, in theory, perfect play is possible. Examples of games like these are tic-tac-toe, chess, checkers, nim... the list goes on. In this dissertation we focus on the Maker-Breaker game, it has two players who each sequentially pick a vertex from a hypergraph, the goal of Maker is to claim all vertices of an edge, the goal of Breaker is to prevent this. We study in which types of hypergraph Maker or Breaker wins and what are the winning strategies. In particular, we consider how this question is related to the degrees of vertices in the hypergraph. We make use of Probability Theory, general Graph Theory, Satisfiability problems and more.

An Analytical Model for Injectivity Tests in Multilayered Reservoir with Crossflow

An injectivity test consists of injecting a phase, usually water, into an oil reservoir in order to collect information about it. Knowing these reservoir's parameters can be valuable in order to improve oil production. Many studies have been presented regarding the behavior of pressure in multilayered reservoirs under single phase fluid flow and, also, during injectivity tests. However, an analytical solution for pressure behavior in multilayered reservoirs during injectivity tests is well known only when the formation crossflow is not considered. Therefore, the present work attempts to develop an analytical model in the Laplace space for multilayered radially composite reservoirs with formation crossflow under single phase fluid flow, and then, for multilayered reservoirs with formation crossflow under two phase fluid flow.

Hölder continuity for Lyapunov exponents of random linear cocycles

A compactly supported probability measure on a group of matrices determines a sequence of i.i.d. random matrices. Consider the corresponding multiplicative process and its geometric averages. Furstenberg-Kesten's theorem, the analogue of the law of large numbers in this setting, ensures that the geometric averages of this multiplicative process converge almost surely to a constant, called the maximal Lyapunov exponent of the given measure. This concept can be reformulated in the more general context of ergodic theory using random linear cocycles over the Bernoulli shift.

A natural question concerns the regularity properties of the Lyapunov exponent as a function of the data. Under an irreducibility condition and in a specific setting (which was later generalized by various authors) Le Page established the Hölder continuity of the Lyapunov exponent. Recently, Baraviera and Duarte obtained a direct and elegant proof of this type of result. Their argument uses Furstenberg's formula and the regularity properties of the stationary measure.

Following their approach, in this work we obtain a new result showing that under the same irreducibility hypothesis, the Lyapunov exponent depends Hölder continuously on the measure, relative to the Wasserstein metric, thus generalizing the result of Baraviera and Duarte .

Domino tilings of 3D cylinders and regularity of disks

In this dissertation we study domino tilings of three-dimensional regions. In particular, we consider the flip connectivity problem for cylinders, i.e., regions of the form D x [0,N]. A flip is a local move: two adjacent dominoes are removed and placed back in a different position. In two dimensions, two domino tilings of the same contractible region are connected by flips. In dimension 3, the problem is subtler. We present the twist, a flip invariant that associates a tiling with an integer number. For many 3D regions, there exist examples of tilings with the same twist which can not be joined by a sequence of flips. Recent papers prove that for certain disks D, called regular, two tilings of the cylinder D x [0,N] with the same twist can almost always be joined by a sequence of flips. Equivalently, a disk D is regular if two tilings of a cylinder of basis D with the same twist can be joined by flips provided that some extra vertical space is allowed. These results are presented and discussed. We then prove regularity or irregularity for new families of quadriculated disks. It turns out that a bottleneck often implies irregularity.
