Lie groupoids are central to modern geometry and mathematical physics, connecting differential geometry, topology, and dynamical systems. Based on a recent chapter co-authored with H. Bursztyn for the *Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics*, this talk will explore the foundations of Lie groupoids, their interactions with related structures like Lie algebroids and Poisson manifolds, and highlight recent advances and emerging research directions in the field.
