RESUMO: Some time ago Prof. Jacques Laskar from Paris appeared on BBC News explaining that in the future Mercury can collide with our planet with a non-negligible probability. This prediction is based on numerical simulations and on some recent achievements in the theory of Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems. In this lecture we will discuss the mathematics behind this prediction and the challenges faced by the modern theory of Hamiltonian Dynamics.
